Came across this recently - very apprpriate for Independence Day -

Ray Charles starts this great song with a more unfamiliar, obscure verse from the song written by Katherine Lee Bates and then sings the first verse last—the one many of us learned in school: "O beautiful for spacious skies…" O beautiful for heroes proved- In liberating strife - Who more than self their country loved - And mercy more than life! - America! Most of you probably have heard on the news or seen the articles in the Reformer about our school’s NECAP scores. This week the Vermont Department of Education released information about which schools had made, or not made, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).

The AYP score is determined using a statistical formula that can be a bit of a mystery to decipher. However, the short explanation is that the State creates a set numerical goal (called the AMO or Annual Measurable Objective) and looks at the NECAP scores of a school to see if they have reached that goal. If your school reaches the AMO Goal it has made AYP. If it doesn’t, you don’t make AYP.
