Newsletter #22

Dear Parents -

We had a great twenty-second (22nd) school week.  The kids worked quite well.  Homework picked up a bit and I saw some headway in the Personal Culture unit.
I continued to see evidence of family stories, family trees, country maps, and flags.  Check in with your child to see how he or she is doing.  The unit will end in two weeks at the February Break!

Our math unit, Measuring Polygons, is off to a good start.

The Literature Groups continue to be viable. The kids seem to like the small settings.  Our reconfiguration is well.

Our Shared Literature book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor, captivated the kids.  This was a powerful book about events in 1932 Mississippi. Right now we’re working on our story boards as well as some literature activities related to the book.  The kids enjoyed viewing the movie and noted many differences between that and the book.

About seven of you consistently send back the signed independent reading logs for your children.  I’d like that number to go up if possible.  Reading at home will certainly help our reading efforts here at school.

Some parents have been e-mailing me regularly to be informed about their kids’ progress.  Everyone is welcome to do that.  Below is a field trip permission form for you to sign.

Grade 5

Dear Parents,

The 5th grade team will be going to Kipling Cinema to see The Lightning Thief on Wednesday, February 17 at 12:45.  Ms. Parks spend an entire 4th grade year with the kids working on mythology. She is excited to be joining us for this outing.  Additionally, several of the classes are currently reading the book as a read aloud.

Children will be transported in vehicles. We will be looking for volunteer drivers.

As part of our package each child will receive a small soda and popcorn. The concession stand will not be open. Please do not send additional money with your child.

                                                                                                                                            Sincerely,

                                                                                                                     5th Grade Team
