Literacy: In first grade students engage in a variety of reading and writing experiences not only in the classroom but druing their literacy block time. Children will focus on certain authors and illustrators such as Leo Lionni, Lois Ehlert, Eric Carle, Jan Brett, and Eileen Christelow. By studying a body of work students learn to recognize artistic styles. This allows them to experiement with the techniques that they learn in art class.
Math: In math we focus on number and operations. Students learn many ways to make combinations for numbers, using concrete materials as well as problem solving strategies. In first grade children will learn to count to 100 by ones, tens, and fives--both orally and in writing. Students engage in a variety of addition and subtraction problems in which children are asked to show their thinking and work.
Science and Social Studies: Activities in these areas focus on the world around us. We learn about seeds, grasses, and animals. We also have a unit on the sun, moon, and Earth. Students have health lessons that focus on learning about their bodies and how to keep them healthy and safe.
